June 12, 2003 – The Future Medical Solutions podiatry college Step Into Your Future Podiatry Practice Management Workshops presented at the nation’s podiatry colleges by Michael Shore, DPM and Alan Sherman, DPM have advanced the real-world practice preparedness of the next generation of podiatrists.  Warmly welcomed as they crossed the country, Drs. Sherman and Shore’s bare bones practical approach stressed the goals of making “first class marketers” out of the students and residents, teaching them practice building skills and giving them the tools to become a valuable part of any practice that they join or start.

Jason D. Crilley, DPM at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, said, “ …it was the most informative lecture for me personally in the past two years of residency.  That along with the website are an incredible service to the profession.”  Bruce Pinker, DPM at the Temple workshop said, “I (also) learned that there is a lot I must consider regarding starting a practice, entering a partnership, and marketing myself. It also gave me hope that I will be able to accomplish my goals.”  Michael Trepal, DPM, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine said, “The true value of this event was a clear message to these wonderful graduates and now current colleagues that the profession does care about them and is willing to welcome them in.”  Jim Kutchback, DPM, Surgical Resident at Northwest Medical Center in Margate, Florida said, “The lectures were very informative and full of practical knowledge.  The venders at the conference represented a nice cross section of podiatry related products and services.  Medicis, Moore Medical and Dermik were especially generous with some nice gifts.  I had the opportunity to review the binder of practice management material that you distributed to everyone.  I am very impressed by your graciousness in sharing that information.  We, as students and residents, are usually not exposed to this type of knowledge (business, mgmt., etc.).  I believe this to be as important as the didactic and clinical knowledge that we spend the majority of our time accumulating. I greatly appreciate making the Practice Management Conference available to us AND at no cost! “

The tour ended in New York, where Drs. Trepal, Spilken and Ross, as well as Sylvia Burnside and Jessica Hernandez orchestrated a smooth as silk workshop. The administration at NYCPM made attendance at the workshop mandatory, which filled the room with over 150 students and residents.  This great turnout validated the decision made by the 60+ companies that supported the workshops this year, to such an extent that most have already renewed again for next year.  The successful visit to New York and the entire 2003 tour culminated in attending the incredible dignified and uplifting graduation that Dean Trepal and the Board of Directors of NYCPM put on for the outgoing class of 2003 at the famous Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.  Future Medical Solutions founders Alan Sherman, DPM and Michael Shore, DPM were treated to VIP treatment at the memorable event, which featured a keynote address by William G. Plested, III, M.D., Chair-Elect of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association (AMA).  Dr. Plested’s themes of the value of the DPM training and honesty in dealings with patients, were greeted with reverence by the impressive class of 2003.

Plans are now being laid for next year’s tour.  Some excellent suggestions made by the participating vendors are being considered to improve the workshops further and maximize the learning experience for the students and residents.  Chief among them are combining the student and resident exhibition visitation and compressing them into one 3 hour period, and doing a series of hands on vendor demo/workshops.

Additional Comments

Dear Dr Evans,

Thank you for the recent workshop held at your institution on April 29, 2003; Podiatry Practice Management Workshop and mini trade show. I am currently a third year surgical resident and the timing of this event could not have been better.  I found the lectures and information distributed very helpful now that

I am looking to open my own private practice. Actually, the workshop material has provided me with a good guideline (and timeline) for internal and external marketing, office management and practice pearls.

Finally, information on the management aspect of podiatry has been made easily available to residents! I will indeed have my fellow residents look out for this workshop next year.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Colette D'Altilio, DPM

Dear Drs. Shore and Sherman

I wanted to thank you for inviting our residents to your “Future Medical Solutions” seminar.  I understand the program receives a lot of support from Moore Medical and Medicis.  Please relay my appreciation to them.

The residents tell me that the lecture presentations were excellent and they received very valuable manuals filled with forms and suggestions.  Is it possible to get a copy of this manual for my office?  Great job guys,

Bruce Cohen, DPM

Dear Drs. Shore and Sherman

Both of you should be extremely proud of the practice management seminar you brought to Barry University.  Three of my residents and one of my former residents attended.  They came back the next day fully charged and very enthusiastic about their future in podiatry.

This one day indoctrination into the real world was a real shot in the arm for them.  I believe all of them intend to spend more of their time in the office setting.

I understand that CPME is urging residency programs to put greater emphasis on practice management.  The Future Medical Solutions Seminar helped my residents and I understand how important it is not to neglect this issue.

Thanks for all that you have done.

Dear Drs. Sherman and Shore,

The Des Moines Podiatric Practice Management Club, and indeed the whole student body, would like to thank you for coming to our school and putting on a wonderful seminar. While it is true we will not be able to practice for a few years yet, it is never too early to start learning the practical nuts and bolts of implementing, in a real world setting, the clinical and hard science information we have been studying.  We are extremely grateful for Dermik and Moore Medical that make this seminar a possibility.  We are grateful that these companies and others take an interest in our education.

The entire day was a wonderful experience. The presentations you both presented were very insightful.  The practice management pearls will prove very beneficial in the years to come.  The luncheon was a great opportunity to associate with the companies that support podiatric medicine. We were glad to see so many vendors that came to visit with our students.  We hope that each one of them enjoyed their time at Des Moines University and will return again soon.

We were also especially pleased by the binder full of reference materials the two of you prepared. It will prove invaluable in the years ahead.  It will be a vital resource for us as we get into clinical practice.

Thank you once again for all the work you put into the conference.

Dear Drs. Shore and Sherman,

On behalf of the students at the California School of Podiatric Medicine, I would like to thank you for bringing the Future Medical Solutions event to our school.  We learn so much about medicine and podiatry in the classroom, but we seldom hear about the things we need to know as we begin our own careers as podiatrists.  Your practice management presentations not only provided us with knowledge we need as we enter into our future, but your enthusiasm was certainly motivational and reinforces the importance of starting early.  The trade show portion of the event was a unique opportunity for students to visit with the vendors and become acquainted with some of the new products and instruments used in podiatry.

Additionally, we would like to thank Dermik for providing the binders full of practice management knowledge and for a fabulous lunch.  Dermik has always been a huge supporter of the students and we appreciate all that they do for us.

Thanks again for such an impressive and enjoyable presentation.  It is our hope that Future Medical Solutions will consider returning to our school for a second annual event.

Sincerely,

Samantha Mullins

Dear Dr. Alan Sherman and Michael Shore,

I would like to express my gratitude for the Practice Management Seminar that you and Dr. Michael Shore organized for students and residents at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine.  What a great turn out this proved to be!

The presentations given by you, Dr. Shore and others at the seminar offered me more valuable insights on how to run a private practice.  The given lectures focused on specific and very useful points that can make one successful.  I am getting ready to make a transition from an associate to a partner, and I cannot tell you enough how much great information I accumulated from the seminar to help me do so.

Furthermore, I was very impressed with the amount of vendors that supported the meeting.  I had time to speak with each and every one of them regarding their products.  No doubt, I am planning on using a lot of their products as the direct result of my personal interaction with the vendors.

Please send my special thanks to the companies that made this all possible, especially to Medicis and Moore Medical.  I found the seminar to be invaluable to students and residents and I hope that you will continue to provide this service for years to come.

Sincerely,

Mark Beylin, D.P.M.

Dear Drs. Shore and Sherman,

I would like to thank you guys, Dr. Beylin as well as the sponsors like Moore Medical and Medicis for this great Practice Management Seminar you put together.  Even though I have another year to go in my training, it was very educational.  Unfortunately, the topic of Practice Management is not covered at school all that thoroughly; I am glad you came up with the idea of organizing the workshops.

I hope that you will continue doing this type of seminar for years to come. Thanks again,

Elina Sherman, DPM

Dear Drs. Shore and Sherman,

Hey, I just wanted to thank you and the sponsors for the great seminar yesterday.  I really enjoyed it.  I have been struggling to figure out so much of this stuff out on my own.  What a pain!  You guys managed uncover so many small and precious pearls that make so much sense.

I'll be setting up a place in Arizona soon and I feel more prepared than I did prior to the seminar.

My only recommendation is to have one of these seminars during the year also for those of us that like to have a "heads up" earlier on in the game!

Thank you again for everything.   Please also pass on my thanks to the sponsors and those who participated.  The book that was distributed will be an excellent reference for me!

Dear Dr. Shore and Sherman,

I would like to express my gratitude to you, Dr. Sherman, and all the sponsors for making this seminar possible.  The information presented was very educational and useful.  The vendors were great with their product demonstration.  I am sure when I get out "in the real world" I will be using their products to benefit my patients.  Thank you all for contributing to our profession.

Dear Dr. Shore and Sherman,

I am writing to express my thanks to everyone who helped to bring the "Step into Your Future" Podiatric Practice Management Workshop to the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. Most of all, to thank the major sponsors: Podiatry Online, Moore Medical and Medicis.  As a resident, I feel that the workshop was very valuable.  I greatly appreciated the binder that is filled with forms, coding information and contacts of suppliers.  It was nice to see all the vendors showing their support to the future practitioners.  I personally took the opportunity to visit each of them and to learn more about their products.  Once again, thank you for allowing be to be part of a great workshop!
